Lauca National Park was created in 1970. It covers an area of 137,883 hectares, including areas of foothills and highlands. Administratively, it belongs to the commune of Putre, province of Parinacota, Region of Arica and Parinacota. In 1981, it was declared part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Many people who are reading the name Patagonia will think instinctively that the National Park Patagonia is Torres del Paine. But actually this park is much „younger“ than its bigger brother National Park Torres del Paine. Patagonia National Park was officially created in December 2018 and is located north of Torres del Paine in the beautiful region of Aysén.

I was thinking, back in those years (1959) it must have been almost an impossible mission to reach such remote places. Without internet, or without all the technology, clothes, or footwear that mountaineers have now, not even mentioning the conditions of the roads and that there were no social media that showed through photos how amazing this place is.
