Cochamo Water Falls in Chile

Visit an internationally known climbing destination

5 days/4 nights tour

This light to medium difficulty trekking takes you into Cochamó Valley, located east of Reloncaví Fjord in Southern Chile’s Lake District. The valley is an internationally known climbing destination and rising in popularity among hikers. We recommend visiting Cochamó Valley outside the peak season (January and February). You’ll spend three days hiking, while the first and last day are required for arrival and departure from and to Puerto Montt Airport.

Program

This trip begins at the airport of Puerto Montt, gateway to the Lake District. We meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in the nearby lakeside town Puerto Varas. Here, you meet your guide for a briefing that prepares you for the upcoming trekking. Afterwards, you are free to walk along the beautiful coastal promenade and relax in one of the many cafés, while enjoying spectacular views of the area’s snow-covered volcanoes.

Accommodation: 3*-Hotel in Puerto Varas

After picking you up at your hotel this morning, we travel on idyllic country roads to the Reloncaví Fjord, a narrow estuary of the eponymous bay that lies in front of Puerto Montt. We follow its shoreline until reaching the village of Cochamó. Here, the gravel road leads deeper into the mountains, until reaching the trailhead, a former Jesuit path. We walk on a slightly ascending path of low to medium difficulty through untouched forest, along the crystal-clear Cochamó River. After five to six hours, we reach the sector La Junta, where the view opens up to the 400-meter-high granite rocks that frame the valley. We stay here for the next two nights.

Accommodation: Mountain hut in La Junta

Today you should pay a visit to the nearby Toboganes – natural water slides – for which La Junta is famous. The granite stone forms a natural water slide that treat anyone daring to get on it to an adrenaline rush. The ice-cold, turquoise-colored river, the bright stone and the lush green vegetation offer a mesmerizing picture.

In addition, there are several day hike options available today. One of the easier ones is the hike to the amphitheater, which offers breathtaking views of the valley and the Cochamó River.

Accommodation: Mountain hut in La Junta

Today, we leave La Junta and hike the same way back to the trailhead. The path leads us through old-growth forest along the murmuring river. Upon arrival in the afternoon, our transfer is waiting for us to take us back to Puerto Varas.

Accommodation: 3*-Hotel in Puerto Varas

Take a last look at the perfectly cone-shaped Osorno Volcano before leaving Puerto Varas today. We take you back to the airport in Puerto Montt, from where you can fly back home via Santiago, or continue your journey to another region of Chile.
