New Tour in San Pedro de Atacama: Vallecito

Vallecito or Little Valley near San Pedro de Atacama in Chiel

To evaluate the current situation of tourist destinations in northern Chile, our colleague Claudia Dittrich traveled to San Pedro de Atacama in October. At the moment, some popular destinations are still closed, and it is not yet certain when they will be reopened. Among them are the half-day tours to Valle de la Luna, and to Laguna Chaxa in the Salar de Atacama. Below is the complete list of the currently closed destinations.

The reasons are manifold: places closed due to the pandemic, capacity problems with control personnel, or an indirect influence of the flourishing lithium mining.

Claudia therefore looked around for alternative destinations on site. She especially liked the half-day excursion to Vallecito: a great alternative to the visit of the moon valley Valle de la Luna.

Vallecito: See wonderful dunes in the desert

From your lodging in San Pedro de Atacama we will start this excursion to the small valley or also known as Vallecito. This place is located like the Moon Valley in the Cordillera de la Sal, so the landscapes you will find will be as if you were on the moon.

During this trip, you will walk in the beautiful desert panorama, make a stop at the salt mountain viewpoint, and you will discover Uyllu Tulor, an ancient archaeological site of a former village complex. The desert trip ends with a cocktail and an unforgettable sunset.

“This excursion is worth it, 100% recommended.” Claudia Dittrich
